ASL 1020

An introduction to the basics of American Sign Language. This course also briefly introduced Deaf history and culture. Class taught entirely in ASL, with the exception of the first day.

 

ASL 2010 / 2020

These courses continued teaching vocabulary but started to advance into better language skills. Started learning grammar structure and improving conversations. Also covered some Deaf history and Deaf culture. These courses were also taught strictly in ASL with the exception of the first day.

 

ASL 3010 / 3020 Advanced ASL

These courses covered more in-depth vocabulary for more advanced topics. Conversational and receptive skills were improved to a proficient-plus level, focusing on fluency. There was a focus on presenting in ASL and improving signing skills – specifically in including non-manual markers accurately. These courses were also taught strictly in ASL with the exception of the first day.

 

ASL 4010 Linguistics of ASL

Course currently in progress. This course covers how ASL is a real language. It focuses on the deconstruction of the language into phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics also comparing it to English. It also covers Deaf history, mainly focusing on how ASL became a language not just communication. There was also a focus on the fields of linguistics – sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, historical linguistics, and applied linguistics - and how they relate to ASL. This course was taught in ASL.

ASL 3000 Fingerspelling

This course was taught in ASL. It focused on signing fluency and receptive skills needed for fingerspelling accuracy.

ASL 3050 Deaf Studies

This course was taught in ASL and with interpreters. It focused on some Deaf history but mostly on Deaf culture and the Deaf community. It focused on the everyday lives of Deaf Americans, including guest speakers. Some topics included oralism, technology, d/D deaf, and community.

ASL 4100 Advanced Deaf History

This course was taught in ASL. It taught about deaf people before sign language, the birth of sign language, the creation of ASL, deaf schools, and important figures.

ASL 4050 Advanced Deaf Culture

This course was taught in ASL. It focused on the difference between d/D deaf and covered topics like Deaf gain, Deaf epistemology, and Deaf Crit Theory.

ASL 4600 Deaf Literature

This course was taught in ASL. In Progress. It includes topics on Deaf history and Deaf culture. It focused on Deaf literature, folklore and stories.

Other Significant Courses

LANG 3000 Intro to Linguistics

This course covered the basic of linguistics. It focused on the phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of English – though it was also discussed in a general sense.

 

LANG 3710 Language and Culture (Linguistic Anthropology)

Course in Progress. This course focuses on an anthropological view of linguistics and how culture and language are related.

Minor Courses

HIST 3330 History of Modern Japan

This course covered the different eras of Japanese history focusing on important historical figures, changes on government, and wars. It also covered the different classes, throughout the different eras.

             

HIST 3720 Renaissance

This course focused on the renaissance period. It covered what happened during that period and the art and literature that came from it.

             

HIST 3840 History of Modern France

This course covered the history of France. It focused on significant historical events and people, also covering the different classes and regions.

             

HIST 3900 Modern Military History

This course focused on military history. It covered most of the major wars for the past couple hundred years. It also focused on significant military figures and military technology.

             

HIST 4930 Food and History

This course talked about the importance of food throughout history. It covered topics like the meaning of food throughout different times and regions and the difference between what is considered cuisine now and then or by region.
